The J. Frank Jungman Neighborhood Library, originally constructed in 1975, underwent a $6,788,000 major renovation and reopened in October 2016. This project consisted of a complete renovation of the existing 18,530 square foot library. Only the foundation, concrete wall panels and roof structure were reused. The project includes new window wall and storefronts, new roof system, new mechanical, electrical and plumping systems, enhanced electrical power to service a large increase in computer services, new finishes, a new monument sign, and the re-configuration of internal spaces. The new facility contains a separate space for adult reading, a quiet room for adults, a children's reading room with space for toddlers, and a gaming area. Additionally, there is a separate area for teens and a meeting space for use by the public.
During the schematic design energy modeling exercise, ENERGY STUDIO evaluated two mechanical system options for the office and administration area. System option 1 consisted of a DX multi-zone air-handling unit; system option 2 utilized a DX variable air volume air handling unit coupled with series fan powered boxes. Through the energy analysis, system option 2 was found to provide a 10% higher energy cost savings than system option 1. Throughout the design, ENERGY STUDIO also provided feedback on exhaust air energy recovery and building envelope improvements such as wall insulation quantity and glazing performance.
The final design demonstrated an annual energy cost savings of 27% compared to ASHRAE 90.1-2007. Additionally, the project earned a LEED Silver certification.
